Sick vids, tight moves!

Cops VS. Skateboarders

October 15th, 2008 Mitch

We as skateboarders have always been hassled for skateboarding. The only difference now is that thanks to the influence of MTV skater based reality show’s skateboarding is more accepted and recognized. Police are always giving us the same line: “Why don’t you go skate the skatepark”. Seriously, we skate the streets because we need to it’s a part of our soul. You can never really duplicate a real street spot. And finding new terrain to skate is all part of the fun and adventure of street skateboarding.

Here are some clips where you can determine if the Cop or the Skateboarder won.

1.¬† “Don’t Call Me Dude!” Officer Salvatore Rivieri vs Eric Bush

Officer Rivieri was suspended with pay and was investigated by Internal Affairs.  He was caught on tape AGAIN, doing a similar thing to another individual.  Peep that vid here.

2.  Dude Shreds the Autobahn at 62 MPH!

The guy (as of early September) is still be hunted by Police.  Read more here.

3. Skater Scraps with a Security Guard (cause they’re kinda like cops, right?)

No comment from me, other than the fact that I think the Guard lost his cool and blew it out of proportion.

4.¬† Lady Police Officer Messes Up What Would’ve Been a Great Trick (and assaults him too)!

This also made pretty big news in the local area, which you can watch here.

5.  Officer Chokes Multiple Skaters (including one girl)

This one cause a lot of controversy on Go Skate Day due to most people agreeing that the cop was way out of line.  The kids were arrested and placed on house arrest.  Along with the video being submitted to Youtube, it was sent to the Arkansas Police Department and it all went downhill from there, including locals calling 911 to comment on the video.  The video was also featured on The Daily Buzz:

6.  Bam Margera vs Security Guard

This is actually a pretty funny video.¬† In the end, it looks as though the guy might not even be security…he might just be the landscaper.¬† It doesn’t end well for this security guard/gardener!

7.  Security Guard Owns Skater

8.  Skateboarder Hits Security Guard in the Head

As a skater, even I wan’t to kick this skaters ass!¬† Too far!!

9.  SDSU Student Gets Tasered by Police for Skating on Campus

The full article is here, along with other video where they interviewed the skater, Joshua Gandy.

10.  Skaters Shreds on the 405 Freeway on Go Skate Day!

Ok, so this might actually be an Etnies commercial, but you could imagine how sick this would be!!

Bonus:¬† David Spade + Police Academy 4 = ‘Nuff Said

OK…so David Spade can’t skate THAT well.¬† It’s actually Tony Hawk doing the stunts…shred or die!

I know skaters and cops are notorious adversaries, but, in the end, can’t we all just get along?

Foot Locker Buys Out CCS Mailorder?

October 3rd, 2008 Mitch

Yup, the title says it all. Foot Locker has agreed to purchase CCS in its entirety for $102 million dollars. Talk about big money! One thing for sure that can be said is that the expansion and marketing of CCS will definitely broaden even more than it already is.

You can find a Foot Locker at almost every mall you could possibly imagine. And the possibilities have just expanded for CCS even more. Don’t be surprised if the once at your home catalogue service starts opening up some shops here and there. I’m not saying its going to happen for sure, but with the new ownership anything’s possible. It’s kind of ironic and strange at the same time because CCS has been around for a good while now.

It was actually the first “skateboarding catalogue” I was introduced to so I go way back with it. Many people might not have been aware that it was around for so long. But nowadays if you notice it seems a lot of “OG” companies are cashing out and reeling in the cash. And for all of you former CCS customers out there, just be aware of who you are basically ordering off of now. If you wouldn’t shop at Foot Locker to begin with then realize what it means to shop at CCS now.

I personally prefer my local home grown core skate shop. You can never go wrong with that. Remember where it all started homies.

Skateboarding and Corporate America

September 20th, 2008 Ruben

Chaz Ortiz Mountain Dew Tour 2008Chaz Ortiz wins the Dew tour street stop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Also known as “the Toyota Challenge”. Doesn’t that sound funny to you? It’s insane what skateboarding has attracted. Playstation, Right Guard, Wendys, Toyota, and Panasonic as tour stop sponsors. Wow!!! Talk about big money and the most corporate of companies. Its absolutely mind blowing how everyone is capitalizing on our sport all of a sudden.

One thing I can tell you is that the possibilities of someone making a living off of skateboarding are seeming a lot more realistic. A kid at school could actually say I want to become a professional skateboarder and actually might have a shot at it this time around. Well that is as opposed to a decade back ago. Skateboarding’s mainstream appeal due to the X-games, and shows on MTV, of course, have really made it more acceptable to the public eye. Sure the same usual suspects are always coming out of the tongue of the random pedestrian. For example Tony Hawk, Ryan Sheckler, Bam Margera, or even Rob Dyrdek. And as much as you dislike some of them for their fame you have to admit they had a huge impact on skateboarding itself.

Imagine living in a world where a random old man at a counter asks you about Richie Jackson or Chris Haslam. I think not. The industry is the way it is and there is nothing you can do about it, whether you are stoked on it or not. One thing I am stoked about though is that finally someone different wins a Dew Tour stop for a change. Props to Chaz!

Automatic Magazine’s 5th Annual Battle of the Shops

September 9th, 2008 Ruben

This past weekend was the 5th annual Automatic Battle of the Shops, which went down during the ASR Tradeshow in San Diego, CA. This years first place deer head trophy went to none other than Pacific Drive whose team consisted of Adrian Mallory, Adrian Gephart, Andrew Elliot and Anthony Williams. With Andrew Elliot’s 1st place finish in the Rail section and super decent standings from the rest of the team in their sections, a first place win was secured by the San Diego based shop.

This isn’t the first time Pacific Drive has won Battle of the shops, they are no stranger to the Automatic Deer head trophy at all. They basically took back the crown this year and I am sure they are stoked. Even though they took first place overall the level of skateboarding at the event should not be overlooked.

Tons of teams and riders did super well. There was even an 8th place tie, as odd as that may sound. Jimmy Carlin rode for street machine and retook his first place crown in the double set section. I was not surprised at all seeing as to how his training facility in the Black Box warehouse is mirror image of the double set that was there. I noticed there were a couple of no-shows to the contest and that’s too bad because the entire team standings of the event could have been entirely different.

The course itself was amazing. I personally got to skate the tech center section and it was off the hook. Wouldn’t mind having that set up in the backyard. And a lot of the pyramid type bank stuff in the tech section is harder to skate than you would think. Overall this contest is super fun and entertaining to watch. There is so much going on and hammers get thrown down every few seconds. Cant wait to see who takes it next year.

15 of the Most Painful Extreme Sporting Falls

August 14th, 2008 Vince

Adrenaline junkie or not, no one likes wiping out, smashing their face into cement or breaking limbs. However, skate clothes or not, if you participate in extreme sports, it’s more than likely that at some point you will be injured, or could even face death. So, before you decide to try something like snowboarding down Mount Everest with a rocket strapped to your back, check out these extreme sport mishaps, and remember, these are the guys that survived.

Skateboarding Falls

Although you have to admit the 10+ second, multi-level, railing grind was pretty impressive, with that talent, don’t you think he should’ve been able to jump off before hitting the sign?

This is a great example of how extreme sports can hinder one’s reproductive abilities. I’m sure his future wife will understand it was too tempting a line to not try.

Obviously, x-rays weren’t needed to determine a fracture of the left arm.

Inline Skating Mishaps

Take special note of the bounce after the initial impact.

A 10-foot fall onto cement and metal can’t ever end well, but I think this poor guy found the most painful way to do it. Hey, at least there won’t be another generation of maniac idiots spawned from this obvious genius.

Snowboarding Accidents

Considering the fact that he somehow managed to make it past the first fall, and avoided creating an avalanche, I guess this fall could have been worse.

Apparently no one warned this guy that snowboarding down a rocky mountain wasn’t the best idea.

Okay, there are no falls in this clip, but it had to be included because it’s simply amazing and it would have killed almost anyone other than the now legendary Norwegian snowboarder, Terje Haakonsen.

BMX Crashes

Considering he was riding a bike towards a cement wall and metal door, he couldn’t have expected a much better outcome.

Dirt Bike Collisions

This guy quickly found out that trying to cheat by cutting across the track wasn’t the way to win, but good try.

Extreme sports like motor cross are for professional athletes only. I know it looks easy and fun, but don’t be fooled, it can be quite dangerous, especially if you are a middle aged obese woman…

Bungie Jumping Disasters

Scaring yourself silly can be a fun past time, and there are few better ways to do it than jumping off of a platform and hurtling toward the ground with only a bungie cord preventing you from splattering on the pavement. The best part is that if the bungie cord doesn’t snap, you still have a shot at dying in a retarded way. Just ask this guy, who almost gets strangled by the bungie cord under his own body weight.

Sky Diving Trouble

Getting sucked out of an airplane and stuck on its wing probably wasn‚Äôt this guy‚Äôs sky diving dream. I’m not sure if I’d consider him extremely lucky, or extremely unlucky. Either way, I bet he is the only person in the world who can say he‚Äôs been cloud surfing like Kit Cloudkicker from Tailspin.

Skiing Falls

If you have ever watched ski jumping, this is probably exactly what you secretly wanted to happen. Turns out, it’s as spectacularly awesome as you imagined, plus the guy lives.

Surfing Wipeout

Big wave surfing isn’t for the faint of heart. Wipeouts like the one in this video can push surfers 20 to 50 feet below the surface. Often times they only have about 20 seconds to get their bearings and swim to safely to the surface before the next monster crashes. Surviving more than three consecutive breaking waves is considered near impossible.

15 of the Best Places to Skate

June 21st, 2008 Vince

Best Places to Skate That aren’t Made for Skateboarding

Although skateboarding in a designated skate park can be fun, sometimes it’s more exciting to skate somewhere you’re not supposed to. Check out these cool (and mostly illegal) places to skate.

1. Abandoned Swimming Pools

This abandoned pool in Chichester, England was 25-meters long, and has a ramp that took it to a depth of over 12 meters. Unfortunately, it was recently demolished.

2. Skate Bowl Filled With Balloons

It took over three hours to blow up the almost 8000 balloons required to fill this skate bowl in Portland, Oregon.

3. Abandoned Water Parks

MTV’s Rob and Big recently stopped by an abandoned water park to show off their moves. Besides the fact that it would only take a slight slip or miscalculation to fall 50-feet to your death, water parks are a pretty sick place to skate.

4. Closed Roads

It’s a rare treat if you can find a skatable closed road, or get someone to close one down for you. Due to a complete road closure of Cheddar Gorge it was possible to achieve the downhill run from the video.

5. New York City

It’s the dream of many to skate the NYC streets. The lucky skaters who grew up in the city through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s had free range of the big apple. Unfortunately, it’s now illegal to skate anywhere besides the few skate parks available. However, every summer there is a Go Skate Day held in NYC, during which hundreds of people skate at and between all of the skate parks in the city. If you want to skate the NYC streets, this is your best bet.

6. Treadmills

As long as the treadmill you’re using is at your house and not the gym, you won’t be breaking the law.

7. Old Metal Tubes

If you can’t skate around a tube, you can always let it roll around you.

8. Parking Garages

Parking garages are a great place to skate on a rainy day, especially if you are into slalom.

9. Trampolines

The trampoline is a great place to practice skate tricks. All you need is a trampoline and a skate deck and you are ready to go. If you’re interested, these are all the ticks landed (in order) in the above clip:

Cannonball, fs 360, bsheelflip, double heelflip, varialheelflip, switch kickflip, fsbigspin, switch kickflip, 360 flip, fsbigspinheelflip, fingerflip, bsheelflip, inward heelflip, fingerflip, varialheelflip, 360 heelflip, double heelflip, heelflipindy, switch kickfliptailgrab, fsbigspinheelflip, bsbigspinheelflip, bsbigspinkickflip, madonna, switch kickflip, heelflip, heelflipindy, bs 360, fs 360, bs 360 ollie north, sal flip, hardflip, fskickflip, 360 flip, judo, madonna, bsbigspinheelflip, varialkickflip, varialheelflip, 360 flip, hand slap flip(?), switch kickflip, switch heelflip, heelflip, kickflip, kickflip pretzel foot landing, pretzel footed heelflip sex change, bsheelflip, varialheelflip, switch kickfliptailgrab, bsbigspinkickflip, roastbeef.

10. The Grand Canyon

Please, only skate off a Grand Canon cliff if you are as well versed at base-jumping as the guy in this video.

11. Storm Drains

Setting aside the dangers of sudden flooding, getting lost, or getting dumped out off a huge drop, this looks surprisingly fun.

12. Down a Mountain

Alright, so this one isn’t on a Skateboard, but it could be theoretically. Either way, I couldn’t leave this one out.

13. Highway Guard Rails

Not a whole lot of room for error, but sometimes the best places carry the greatest risk.

14. Children’s Slides

You can find them most anywhere. Children’s slides can be slippery, so watch out, most people fail miserably their first couple of times down.

15. Alpine Slides

If you have never been on an alpine slide, they are basically concrete slides that run down the side of a mountain (usually at a ski resort). They can be very dangerous, and you can get going too fast easily. I imagine skating one of these would border on insanity.
