This should be a printable poster!

not much of an evolution

Chuck Reynolds 05.16.09 at 2:15 am

lol I remember those big fat boards with huge wheels back in the 80’s when I was a kid… I remember the double kicktails came out, parents wouldn’t get me one because they were too expensive… meh

The big question is offcourse, will it change in the future? And what will it be like?!

matty leadfoot 05.16.09 at 2:23 am

that is NOT where the evolution ends…

Ever seen a Landyachtz Evo??
Nice graphic,… but how about looking a bit further into the evolution of skateboards in the last 20 years.
Skateboarding died with the mass manufacture of crap skatepark decks designed to be broken by 11 year olds.

I think you should include branch offs, like longboards, snowboards, mountainboards, wakeboards, snakeboards, luge, slalom, etc. Evolutionary adaptation for specialised niches.

awesome i digg it. thanks

Might be nice to show how the longboard evolved from the classic skateboard and on towards the many iterations it appears in today. Or branch the tree further and show some of the weird ’skateboards’ that are out there now. Cool graphic, keep it up.

You forgot to mention the length– I still have a 42 inch Dewey Weber and a 40 inch Alva from the 70’s — wow, I am old :)

I’ve seen some whopping big boards around SF; this seems to ignore the “long board” aesthetic that is at least a sizable portion of skate boards.

This is a great website that has the long board

They failed to mention the addition of BONITE to Powell Perallta boards in the mid 80’s. Not sure what this material was but it was black strips in btwn the pieces of pressed board – supposedly made the board stronger and lighter. Anybody else remember that?

jaron 05.16.09 at 9:11 am

you’re forgetting the long boards and racing boards popping off now in so-cal

That’s an interesting pictorial lesson in the evolution of skateboards….

The skateboard has more prehistory than that. Skateboards evolved from home made scooters that go back farther than the surf craze. Home made scooters were a plank of wood with rollerskate wheels and a wooden box nailed on to hold on to. My dad built me one in the early fifties. I broke the box off and thought I had invented the skate board,it was much more fun without the box and Mom said it was dangerous. They showed one in “Back to the Future” 1955.

Im curious to see where skateboards evolve from here

shoziku 05.18.09 at 8:48 am

They didn’t mention the “shark” from the 70’s, wood board with metal wheels. also the “Duraflex” which sported the “new” quiet polyurethane wheels and extremely flexible blue or orange board. also longer and thinner than most, pointy tip and a kicktail. Then the Bonzai aluminum board of the early 70’s as well.

I have one of those neat looking aluminum 70’s boards, still in very good shape. pretty blue, like new wheels…

found a cool kids skateboard producer out of Lake Forest, CA . You will see that the common kids skateboard size is 7.25″ which I think is relavent. Depending on age…the size will differ dramatically http://www.kids-skateboard.com

wasn’t it Jerry madrid who introduced the board that had a tail on both ends or what we know today as the current “street decks”? I myself used to ride lance mountain and alva decks exclusively
